Le plus grand reptile marin du monde – niveau 2

Un père et sa fille ont trouvé un fossile sur une plage du Somerset en Angleterre. Les scientifiques l’ont identifié comme un gros reptile marin datant d’il y a 202 millions d’années.
Ichthyotitan severnensis mesurait entre 22 et 26 mètres de long, une taille similaire à celle des baleines bleues. C’est l’un des plus grands reptiles marins que nous connaissions. L’animal a vécu pendant la période du Trias aux côtés des dinosaures. Cette découverte et une autre en 2016 confirment l’existence d’une nouvelle espèce et nous aident à comprendre la vie marine préhistorique.
De très grosses créatures marines vivaient autrefois dans les océans, et les fossiles nous en disent long sur l’évolution de la vie sur Terre.
