Procès de Big Tobacco Canada – niveau 2

Trois grands cigarettiers, Philip Morris, British American Tobacco et Japan Tobacco, paieront 23,6 milliards de dollars pour mettre fin à un procès au Canada.

Le procès a commencé en 2015 lorsque des fumeurs et d’anciens fumeurs ont poursuivi ces entreprises, affirmant qu’elles n’avaient pas mis en garde les gens contre les risques du tabagisme, alors qu’elles savaient que les cigarettes causaient le cancer depuis les années 1950. Un tribunal du Québec a décidé que les entreprises devaient payer 15 milliards de dollars. Par conséquent, leurs succursales canadiennes ont eu de gros problèmes d’argent.

Les entreprises ont commencé à négocier le paiement final en 2019. Elles se sont mises d’accord sur le montant total, mais la façon dont elles répartiront le paiement n’est pas claire. Le vote final sur le plan devrait avoir lieu en décembre 2024.
