Le Jeudi saint, également connu sous le nom de Jeudi gras, est une célébration très inhabituelle pour certains hommes catholiques des Philippines.

Les fidèles marchent dans les rues et se battent avec des chaînes et des fouets. D’autres participants les frappent avec des bâtons en bois pendant qu’ils s’allongent sur le sol et prient. Les hommes croient que Dieu leur pardonnera après ce rituel douloureux.

Certaines personnes critiquent ce rituel, qu’elles jugent ancien et douloureux, et qui peut avoir un impact négatif sur la santé mentale d’une personne. L’Église a également déclaré qu’il n’était pas nécessaire de souffrir parce que le Christ avait déjà souffert pour les gens. Mais pour de nombreux catholiques philippins, ce rituel fait partie de leur identité.
