À 25 ans, Keir Mather, membre du Parti travailliste, a remporté l’élection partielle de Selby et Ainsty, et il est devenu le plus jeune député de la Chambre des communes.
Mather a grandi près de Selby et il a toujours été très actif en politique. Il a créé un groupe travailliste pour les jeunes. Après avoir étudié l’histoire et la politique à l’Université d’Oxford, il a travaillé comme chercheur et conseiller. Mather aime parler et il soutient l’équipe de rugby de Hull Kingston Rovers. Il voit l’unité dans le sport et veut représenter sa communauté.
La mère de Mather est confiante dans son avenir politique, et elle affirme que son fils pourrait même devenir premier ministre un jour. Les dirigeants du parti disent qu’il a du potentiel et qu’il comprend les problèmes de sa génération.
