Miss Mexique, Fatima Bosch, a été couronnée nouvelle Miss Univers à Bangkok, en Thaïlande, marquant la fin d’une saison de concours de beauté exceptionnellement riche en scandales.
La victoire de la lauréate de 25 ans a été assombrie par une controverse portant sur des allégations de mauvais traitements et de truquage du concours. Au début du mois de novembre, Mme Bosch elle-même, ainsi que d’autres candidates, ont quitté le concours après qu’un officiel l’ait publiquement réprimandée et ait menacé de disqualifier les personnes qui la soutenaient. À la suite de cet incident, deux juges ont démissionné, l’un d’eux accusant les organisateurs d’avoir truqué le concours. L’organisation Miss Univers a par la suite nié tout acte répréhensible. Le concours présentait également Miss Palestine pour la première fois, ce qui a ajouté au caractère très médiatisé de l’événement.
Malgré les turbulences et l’incertitude financière entourant l’organisation Miss Univers, le concours s’est terminé, Bosch continuant à concourir et remportant finalement le titre.
