Une nouvelle société nommée Preventive a levé 30 millions de dollars pour étudier comment modifier en toute sécurité les gènes des embryons humains.
Cette technologie, appelée édition du génome, vise à empêcher les gens d’avoir des maladies génétiques, mais cette recherche est très controversée et soulève de graves questions éthiques. Les personnes qui soutiennent l’entreprise affirment qu’elles travaillent pour une avancée médicale. Les détracteurs affirment que cette technologie pourrait ne pas être utile car les médecins disposent déjà d’autres moyens d’empêcher la transmission de maladies. Ils s’inquiètent également de la possibilité d’eugénisme, où les parents pourraient choisir ou sélectionner des traits pour leurs enfants, ce qui créerait de gros problèmes dans la société. Le plus grand risque est que les médecins apportent des modifications à l’ADN de l’embryon qui se transmettront à tous les enfants futurs, ce qui rendrait les effets inconnus et peut-être dangereux pour les générations futures.
