En Nouvelle-Zélande, la famille Verheul faisait une randonnée sur le Kepler Track, un sentier de randonnée de 60 kilomètres. Ils ont atteint une cabane pour se reposer et camper, et ils ont mis leur caméra GoPro à l’extérieur pour filmer des perroquets kea lorsqu’un kea kleptomane a volé la caméra.

L’oiseau s’est échappé pendant que la GoPro en vol enregistrait le vol, puis elle a enregistré l’oiseau en train de l’attaquer et de lui arracher des morceaux de plastique. La famille a suivi les sons, et le kea s’est envolé lorsqu’elle s’est approchée. Le fils a récupéré la GoPro alors qu’elle continuait à enregistrer.

Le kea est célèbre pour sa curiosité et son espièglerie. Le perroquet vole des objets aux gens pour enquêter sur eux, comme des portefeuilles, des bijoux, des déjeuners et des essuie-glaces.
