Le grand tournoi de sumo au Japon est très populaire, et les habitants de New York s’inscrivent désormais eux aussi à ce sport.
À Manhattan, le New York Sumo Club s’entraîne dans un gymnase qui propose également d’autres arts martiaux. Le club a commencé il y a trois ans avec seulement deux membres, mais il en compte maintenant beaucoup plus et dispose de tapis spéciaux en provenance du Japon. Son fondateur, Oscar Dolan, voulait un endroit où tout le monde pourrait s’adonner au sumo, quel que soit son âge ou son sexe.
Les membres aiment la tradition mais aiment aussi y ajouter leur propre style. Ils portent des ceintures de sumo appelées mawashi et les teignent de couleurs vives pour montrer leur personnalité. Le grand événement du club, l’Empire Cup, a rassemblé 60 lutteurs et de nombreux fans. Ils travaillent maintenant dur pour développer la communauté du sumo à New York.
