L’Alabama a exécuté Kenneth Smith en utilisant de l’azote gazeux. Il s’agissait d’une nouvelle méthode qui n’avait pas été testée auparavant.
La procédure a duré 22 minutes, pendant lesquelles Smith a visiblement lutté pour trouver de l’air. La procédure impliquait un masque et de l’azote pur. Il n’y avait pas d’oxygène, mais l’homme a essayé de respirer pendant un certain temps. La Maison Blanche a exprimé sa profonde inquiétude quant à savoir si cette méthode était toujours acceptable et conforme aux valeurs américaines. Les avocats de Smith ont fait valoir que la méthode était cruelle.
Malgré les critiques internationales, l’Alabama a procédé à l’exécution. Certaines personnes craignent que d’autres États américains n’utilisent cette méthode à l’avenir.
